Kale Westland Winter

My favourite, this winter cabbage with its perfect blue/green curled leaves.

As soon as the plant is almost mature, it makes you long for winter. Wait until the frost is there, because then the kale really gets its flavour. Kale also brings back memories of the past. Mother made the most delicious stew from it. Fresh from the land, on the stump and wrapped in newspaper. Cooked and chopped finely with a kitchen axe. I still do it that way!

Sowing

Sow from the end of April to June in fertile, moist soil. Make shallow furrows and spread the seed thinly. Cover the seeds lightly with soil and water carefully. Thin out the seedlings when they are easy to handle, leave the strongest ones. Fertilise regularly. You can already harvest some leaves from October. You can leave Westland kale in your garden all winter long.
