Dry your own seeds

Nice and not difficult!

It is not difficult and even fun to dry your seeds yourself for the next gardening season. You not only save money but it also increases your independence! There are a few things to keep in mind before you start.

Harvesting from heritage seeds

You can only harvest seeds from heritage seeds, which are seed varieties that have been around for a long time (seed resistant). Exactly the same plants grow from these seeds. Plants that have been crossed (a breeding technique) also called F1 hybrids, do not grow from the same plant. These seeds give a different fruit result or often no fruit at all.

Gaia Seeds only sells high quality open-pollinated natural seeds.

You can get seed from almost every plant or fruit in your vegetable garden. So sow a little extra to get seed from these plants.

Planting with a fruit allows you to grow much longer to harvest seed. You can no longer eat these fruits, they no longer taste good.

Let leafy vegetables shoot into flowers. Such as lettuce, spinach, tatsoi and so on. These flowers can be surprisingly beautiful! When the flower buds are dry you can harvest the seed.

Leg legumes hang on the plant until they are completely dried out.

Pumpkin and melon is not difficult at all, pick the fruit when the stem has dried and then the seed is ready to be dried. Of course you can eat the flesh of this variety.

You can also let tubers and root crops such as beets, radishes and carrots shoot into flowers.

To dry fruits of tomatoes, pepper, eggplant, zucchini and cucumber seeds.

  • It's a nice, dry and warm day. (if not, dry the seed inside)

  • scoop out the seeds from an overripe fruit with a spoon.
  • remove as much of the flesh as possible.
  • Put one spoonful of seed in a coffee filter bag and hang it up.
  • it should be dry within two days.
  • Remove skins and the like and store the seeds in a dry, cool and dark place.
  • You can also freeze, which doubles the storage time.

Try it once!

In the next season, sow some of your dried seeds and some of your purchased Bio Dynamic seeds. Find out how your dried seeds are doing. If the result is disappointing, try again. Investigate what could have been the cause.

If you don't feel like it or if you don't really like the drying, we will supply you with love.

Good luck!
